Hi, Iβm Jessica
A Digital Marketer Turned Professor at St Lawrence College
How did I even end up here?
To be honest, even I am not sure.
I thought, for the longest time, that I would be a writer. And with the evolution of the web, I found myself seeking more opportunities to be a creator. Any artist will tell you that it is the audience response that is the true measure of any piece: that human psychology fascinated me! How can I get more people and more eyes on my content?
That's my weird foray into marketing, where everything, all of a sudden, just clicked.
I loved every minute of my career in the marketing field. I used it as my opportunity to try things, fail and learn. I grew businesses and brands, started new ventures and projects, and built a portfolio of work that I am incredibly proud of.
But, I never felt like I was where I belonged until I stepped into a classroom.
And that's where it all began...
Special Skills
To differentiate myself as a marketer, I learned front-end programming languages to create websites using HTML, CSS and Javascript. I leverage coding languages to create and enhance user engagement and functionality.
I am proficient in SQL for querying databases and extracting data, leveraging Tableau for visualizing insights, and presenting those recommendations back to help an audience make an informed decision-making process.
I embrace opportunities to learn and grow continuously. Whether through tackling new challenges, seeking out knowledge, or honing existing skills, I am committed to personal and professional development.
My current teaching philosophy has developed from my experiences as a life-long learner and a teacher. Three fundamental principles guide my teaching practice:
Fostering an inclusive classroom.
In my classroom, I celebrate diversity. I encourage students to interact with and learn from one another: everyone brings a unique experience to the classroom. As a result, I have modified learning experiences to cater to the students in my classroom, including changing course examples, expectations, and assessments for an international cohort.
Creating a positive learning environment.
A second principle that guides my teaching practice is facilitating a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and participating in classroom activities. I consider studentsβ different learning styles and try to create a learning environment that allows students to apply their knowledge in a diverse set of activities conducive to what they will be exposed to in the real world.
Enthusiasm for the subject matter.
Marketing is fascinating! As a final principle, I strive to evoke enthusiasm around the subject matter. I bring energy to my classroom and have been told that my energy is quite contagious and motivates students to participate with and engage in the course material. Enthusiasm is an intentional component of my teaching practice, and I strongly believe is what contributes to students being invested in the material and successful in my courses.
